Vielmehr sind sie Programm. Sowohl im Schaffen des Klangk\u00fcnstlers Kuhn als auch in den Bildern der T\u00e4nzerin und K\u00fcnstlerin Wada herrscht der Zufall. Wie zum Beweis deuten sie auf die gro\u00dfformatigen bunten \u00d6lbilder von Wada, die in der gemeinsamen Sch\u00f6neberger Altbauwohnung h\u00e4ngen. \u201eWir pr\u00e4sentieren keinerlei zusammenh\u00e4ngende Erz\u00e4hlung, lediglich Strukturen\u201c, sagt Kuhn. Auch aus dieser bewussten Deutungsoffenheit heraus werden sie und ihr Schaffen zu Projektionsfl\u00e4che f\u00fcr das Publikum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201eWenn wir zusammenarbeiten, betrachten wir uns als Parallelen, die sich manchmal ann\u00e4hern, aber selbst dann eher \u00fcberlagernde Ebenen darstellen\u201c, erg\u00e4nzt Wada. Ein Verst\u00e4ndnis, dass beide vom Komponisten John Cage und seinem Lebenspartner, dem T\u00e4nzer Merce Cunningham, abgeschaut haben. In ihren gemeinsamen Arbeiten durfte jede Bewegung auf die andere folgen, jede Tonfolge war erlaubt. Offenheit und Autonomie &#8211; zwei Maximen, \u00fcber die sich auch Wada und Kuhn als K\u00fcnstlerpaar definieren.<\/p>\n<p>\u201eSicherlich, wenn man komplett gegens\u00e4tzliche Ansichten vertritt, dann ist es wohl schwierig auch mal miteinander zu arbeiten und beieinander zu bleiben\u201c, sagt Kuhn. Die Unabh\u00e4ngigkeit auf ihren jeweiligen Feldern, die sich auch in der r\u00e4umlichen Trennung ihrer Arbeitsorte zeigt, sei der Beziehung aber sehr zutr\u00e4glich. \u201eSonst st\u00fcnden wir in einem permanenten k\u00fcnstlerischen Wettbewerb\u201c. Dazu kommt, dass Kuhn und Wada nicht die Muttersprache des jeweils anderen beherrschen. Meist kommunizieren sie auf Englisch. Auch das lasse Raum zwischen ihnen entstehen.<\/p>\n<p>\u00dcber ein gemeinsames Projekt lernte sich das Paar Ende der neunziger Jahre kennen. Er komponierte damals die Musik. Sie tanzte dazu. Ihre erste Zusammenarbeit im damals noch existenten \u201eInstitut Unzeit\u201c war ausverkauft. Und kaum waren sie zusammen, schon dr\u00e4ngte sich ein symboltr\u00e4chtiges Bild auf: Einer gibt den Ton vor, die andere tanzt danach. Chance rules both in the work of the sound artist Kuhn and in the paintings of the dancer and artist Wada. As if to prove it, they point to the large-format, colorful oil paintings by Wada that hang in the shared apartment in Sch\u00f6neberg. \u201cWe&#8217;re not presenting any coherent narrative, just structures,\u201d says Kuhn. This conscious openness to interpretation also turns them and their work into a projection surface for the audience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8222;When we work together, we see each other as parallels that sometimes approach each other, but even then tend to be overlapping levels,&#8220; adds Wada. An understanding that both copied from the composer John Cage and his partner, the dancer Merce Cunningham. In their joint work, each movement was allowed to follow the other, each sequence of notes was allowed. Openness and autonomy &#8211; two maxims that Wada and Kuhn use to define themselves as an artist couple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly, if you have completely opposing views, then it is probably difficult to work with each other and stay together,\u201d says Kuhn. The independence in their respective fields, which is also reflected in the spatial separation of their workplaces, is very beneficial to the relationship. \u201cOtherwise we would be in permanent artistic competition\u201d. In addition, Kuhn and Wada do not speak each other&#8217;s mother tongue. Most of the time they communicate in English. That too creates space between them.<\/p>\n<p>The couple met through a joint project in the late 1990s. He composed the music back then. She danced to it. Their first collaboration in the then still existing \u201cInstitut Unzeit\u201d was sold out. And no sooner were they together than a symbolic image imposed itself: one sets the tone, the other dances to it.
